Elevation-dependent warming in mountain regions of the world

چکیده
NATURE CLIMATE CHANGE | VOL 5 | MAY 2015 | www.nature.com/natureclimatechange It is well known that the rate of temperature change with increased levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is amplified at high latitudes, but there is growing evidence that the rate of warming is also amplified with elevation, such as in mountain environments. This elevation-dependent warming (EDW) has important implications for the mass balance of the high-altitude cryosphere and associated runoff; for ecosystems and farming communities in high-mountain environments; and also for species that reside in restricted altitudinal zones within a mountain range. However, because of sparse high-elevation observations, there is a danger that we may not be monitoring some regions of the globe that are warming the most. Here we review the evidence for EDW and examine the mechanisms that may account for this phenomenon. We conclude with a strategy for future research to reduce current uncertainties and to ensure that the changes taking place in remote high-elevation regions of the planet are adequately observed and accounted for.

Climate change in mountains: a review of elevation-dependent warming and its possible causes
Available observations suggest that some mountain regions are experiencing seasonal warming rates that are greater than the global land average. There is also evidence from observational and modeling studies for an elevation-dependent climate response within some mountain regions. Our understanding of climate change in mountains, however, remains challenging owing to inadequacies in observation...
متن کاملTemperature Variations during the Last Century at High Elevation Sites
Differential temperature changes with altitude can shed light on the relative importance of natural versus anthropogenic climatic change. There has been heightened interest in this subject recently due to the finding that high-elevation tropical glaciers have been retreating and that significant melting from even the highest alpine regions has occurred in some areas during the past 20 years or ...
متن کاملMorphometric Properties of Glacial Cirques in Zagros Mountain, IRAN
The morphometry of 187 cirques like forms is performed in the selected regions of Zagros Mountain with the use of GIS. The cirques like forms were delimitated manually and their headwall and floor boundaries were modified based on the classified slope map. The power law functions were fitted to 187 longitudinal cross-sections of the cirque like forms and their parameters were analyzed. All the ...
متن کاملElevation increases in moth assemblages over 42 years on a tropical mountain.
Physiological research suggests that tropical insects are particularly sensitive to temperature, but information on their responses to climate change has been lacking-even though the majority of all terrestrial species are insects and their diversity is concentrated in the tropics. Here, we provide evidence that tropical insect species have already undertaken altitude increases, confirming the ...
متن کاملElevation-Dependent Temperature Trends in the Rocky Mountain Front Range: Changes over a 56- and 20-Year Record
Determining the magnitude of climate change patterns across elevational gradients is essential for an improved understanding of broader climate change patterns and for predicting hydrologic and ecosystem changes. We present temperature trends from five long-term weather stations along a 2077-meter elevational transect in the Rocky Mountain Front Range of Colorado, USA. These trends were measure...
